Five car checks before fog season
- Headlamps: clean lenses, working low beam and correct alignment. Misaligned lamps light up the fog, not the road.
- Fog lamps and tail lamps: check front and rear fog lamps if fitted, plus all tail and brake lamps.
- Wipers and washer: fresh blades and full washer fluid; fog leaves a greasy film on the glass.
- Defogger and AC: the AC dries the air and clears the inside of the windscreen fastest.
- Battery: cold mornings expose weak batteries. Get it tested if the engine cranks slowly.

How to drive in dense fog
- Use low beam, never high beam. High beam reflects off the fog and blinds you.
- Drive at a speed that lets you stop within the distance you can see.
- Use the left edge line as a guide, not the tail lamps of the vehicle ahead.
- Do not use hazard lamps while moving — they confuse drivers about whether you are stopped. Use them only when stopped.
- If visibility is near zero, leave the highway completely at a dhaba, fuel station or service road and wait.
- Keep windows slightly open at junctions to hear traffic you cannot see.
If you break down in fog
Move the vehicle completely off the road if you can, switch on hazard lamps, place the warning triangle well behind, and wait away from the carriageway. Call +91 93106 94349 or book Roadside Assistance and share your live location.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use hazard lamps while driving in fog?
No. Hazard lamps are for a stopped vehicle. Using them while moving makes other drivers think you have stopped and can cause collisions.
Are yellow fog lamps better?
Properly aimed fog lamps mounted low help you see the road edge. The colour matters less than correct aiming and clean lenses. Aftermarket lamps must not dazzle other drivers.
When is fog worst on NH-27 near Gorakhpur and Kushinagar?
Usually from mid-December to late January, between late night and mid-morning.
